When the caregiver helps the patient up from the floor, both must be kept safe. Transfers should be coordinated between the patient and caregiver to ensure simultaneous maximal effort and to minimize strain on both. Where possible, patients should be encouraged to move themselves. Some patients, particularly those with good balance and upper body strength, may be able to maintain or regain independence by using certain transfer assist devices.
